IXDM and the Critical Media Lab Basel are excited to welcome Florian Kaeser, who will be working at the lab for his BA-thesis in Visual Communication. For that, he is experimenting with old split-flap displays from Swiss Federal Railways SBB. He is creating abstract images forms and animations with the letters of those displays.

The project started in 2018 when he and Elias Hodel, both students of visual communication at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, received several old split-flap displays from SBB. Fascinated by the distinct visual and acoustic impression, they decided to work together on a project using those displays. First, they had to figure out their inner workings before they could expand the use beyond their normal application. Currently, Florian is creating a variation of different text based images and animations. His bachelor thesis will focus on an installation with a newly arranged spilt-flap display.
