Spread from Many Norths

In collaboration with the master’s program Critical Urbanisms (University of Basel), ECAM brings Toronto-based architect and urbanist Mason White to Basel. White is founding partner of Lateral Office, a Toronto-based experimental design practice that operates at the intersection of architecture, landscape, and urbanism, and founding editor of the journal Bracket. In addition to his practice, White is associate professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto.

Mason’s recent research and design work has focused on public infrastructures, modern vernaculars, indigenous cultures, and architecture’s impact in northern and remote contexts. This work is reflected in two publications he co-edited: the Third Coast Atlas (Actar Publishers 2017; with Daniel Ibanez, Clare Lyster, Charles Waldheim) and Many Norths (Actar Publishers 2017; with Lola Sheppard).

The morning workshop will be held at the Critical Media Lab (D 3.05) and focus on Mason’s work with Lateral Office and his publishing practice. The evening lecture is part of the lecture series “Urbanism in Conflict: Cities, Conflict, and Contestation” (University of Basel, Kollegienhaus, Room 035) and focus on his most recent attempts at rethinking the North as plural and a shifting, multivalent territory.
